From the first day of January to the last day of December there are many different kinds of public and national holidays in Syria. These amazing days give you the opportunity to explore the culture and understand what makes Syrian society unique.

The main Christian Holidays in Syria:

 

·         Easter - April 25th

Easter is associated with a spring festival that celebrates Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. The date of Easter varies each year depending on when Easter falls in relation to the Gregorian calendar.

Traditionally there are two Easter celebrations, one on the evening before Palm Sunday and one on Easter morning.

·         Christmas - December 25th, the birthday of Jesus Christ.

Christmas is celebrated with religious customs and activities such as Christmas tree decoration, Christmas foods and drinks, and gift giving.  On Eve there is a celebration called Nargaz (the Arabic word for “surprise”) that involves presents being given to children as well as a visit from Santa Claus.

 

 The main Islamic Holidays in Syria:

 

·         Eid Al Adah - June 29

It is also known as Eid al-Kabir (meaning the Great Eid). This holiday marks the end of Ramadan and Muslims usually celebrate it with a cheerful meal. In celebration of Eid al-Adha, Muslims sacrifice a cow or a ram in honor of the prophet Abraham's obedience.

 

·         Prophet Muhammad's Birthday-September 27th

This holiday is celebrated in honor of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday and is also marked by Muslims with a festive meal. It is one of the two most important Muslim holidays, along with Eid al-Fitr.

 

The main National Holidays in Syria:

·         Revolution Day-March 8th

This national holiday falls on the eighth of March. It celebrates the revolution that took place in Syria in 1963.

·         Independence Day-April 17th

Syria’s independence is celebrated on April 17 as a holiday honoring the nation.

·         Mother's Day - March 21

Mother's Day is an official holiday in Syria and is celebrated on March 21. Syria is one of the first Arab countries to celebrate this holiday after Egypt.
